What each one is

- Ideal for a small job, a single person in charge, and prices that don’t move much during the project.
Where Excel falls short
The problem doesn’t show up on day one, but when the job — or the number of jobs — grows. These are the points where Excel stops helping and starts costing money:
- Formula errors: a SUM range that misses the new rows, or a cell with a hard-coded number instead of a reference, and the total is wrong without anyone noticing.
- Prices by hand: keeping costs current is a manual chore; it’s easy to estimate with prices from months ago.
