Work Section (Cost Group)
The work section is the intermediate level used to organize an estimate: above it sit the major trades or disciplines, and below it the individual items (each with its own unit price). Its purpose is not direct costing but structure, grouping items that belong to the same construction stage, such as site preparation, foundations, structure, masonry, MEP installations and finishes, so that the estimate is readable, comparable and easy to control.
When a work section holds many items, it is broken down into subsections. For example, the "MEP installations" section can be opened into plumbing, drainage and electrical subsections; each subsection in turn groups its corresponding items. This forms a hierarchical structure, section then subsection then item, numbered in a coded sequence (1, 1.1, 1.1.1) that orders the entire bill of quantities.
The amount of a work section is the sum of the amounts of the items it contains (quantity times the unit price of each), and the total estimate is the sum of every section. This structure lets you quickly see how much each stage of the project weighs, compare bids item by item and track physical and financial progress block by block.
In construction estimating, both public and private projects present their bills of quantities and payment applications grouped into work sections; unit-price and estimating software, along with cloud tools like Matterial, reflect this same hierarchy of sections and subsections.
Example
Estimate for a house with section 3 "Masonry": subsection 3.1 "Walls" (items: concrete block wall, tie columns) and subsection 3.2 "Plaster and render" (items: interior wall plaster, exterior render). The amount of section 3 is the sum of all its items, and that total is rolled up into the overall estimate.
